I forgot to do it this year, but when I went online to renew my registration, I found that it costs exactly the same to switch from this plate:

Kinja'd!!!

to this one:

Kinja'd!!!

as it does to just get the sticker. Now, here’s the thing... I’m in the minority in the sense that I actually prefer the first one to the plain alternative tag. Since they’d be the same number, would it be legal for me to order the white one next year and then just continue using my current tag with the new sticker? I just want free garage wall decorations.

I would recommend picking up old plates at a swap meet, craigslist or ebay over this plan...

Well yeah, but still. I can get freebies, so why not? Worst case scenario, I physically change my tag each year.

Eh, it would probably be fine, but do you really want to give them reasons to hassle you?

I mean, all the pertinent information is on the sticker. When I swapped my collegiate tag over to the Chevy, I was going to put the old random number tag on the Ford, but they said it was cheaper to get a new one than sticker the one I already had.

Go figure.

Quite a few states have gone from a stamped plate to a printed plate that must be replaced regularly. Where I live all newer plates require replacement every 7 years, I believe, so they print/produce replacements regularly.

My GF’s mom has vanity plates and they sent her a new set of the new flat ones when she got her latest car, but she liked the old stamped ones, so she just put the flat ones on the wall in the barn and put the old ones with the new stickers on her car...

I think you’re good swapping them around as long as the sticker is current AND the plate is a current issue. When one of them is discontinued, I think you’re compelled to change it at that point.

Otherwise we’d all be driving around with stamped, vintage tags for our states, just updating the stickers each year. I have some 30+ year old ones in mint condition, but I’m not gonna give the cops a reason to pull me over.

Some cars here have the previous issue (white with a grey gradient on top) and I recently saw a currently-registered 2006 Florida tag. So... I don’t think you’re required to change tags right away when new ones come out. Not sure exactly how long they can stay, though.
